Peacekeepers honoured at UNFICYP’s winter medal parade
135 UN peacekeepers were honoured for their service for peace in Cyprus at UNFICYP’s winter medal parade which took place on 16 and 17 December. The Special Representative of Secretary General and Head of Mission, Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, praised the peacekeepers for playing a vital role in implementing UNFICYP’s mandate on the island.
UNFICYP’s Force Commander, Major General Cheryl Pearce and the Mission’ Senior Police Adviser, Chief Superintendent Fang Li also attended the ceremony.
Sector One covers a distance of approximately 90 kilometres from Kokkina village on the western coast of Cyprus to the village of Mammari, west of Nicosia.
Their work to maintain the stability of the buffer zone is crucial to prevent conflict and maintain peace on the island. The area has been the responsibility of the Argentinean contingent since 1993.
