Peacebuilding in Divided Societies Programme 2023

Are you 18-30 years old and interested in learning the fundamentals of negotiation and peacebuilding, and about the women, peace and security agenda? Then come join us for a hybrid programme of interactive workshops led by international experts.

Title: The fundamentals and practice of negotiation

Women, Peace and Security - a global perspective

Location and format of the workshops:

The workshops on 16 January and 1 February will take place in Nicosia, at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone that is accessible to all persons on the island.  The instructors will be joining virtually.  The workshops on 18 January, 15 February and 5 March will take place entirely online.

 What to expect?

  • Interactive hybrid workshops by peacebuilding and conflict management experts, Professors Hrach Gregorian and Joyce Kaufman from the Institute of World Affairs, who will share global perspectives on these topical issues
  • Foundational theoretical and practical tools for building durable peace, key challenges and opportunities for transformation in divided societies
  • A strong focus on the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and the participation of women in peace and political processes.
  • Participate in a negotiation simulation where you will be tasked to resolve a fictional conflict scenario through role playing in teams.
  • Meet and connect with fellow youth with similar interests from all communities living in the island
  • Opportunities to participate in exclusive networking events with alumni of the programme and international and local experts
  • Priority in being accepted to the Young Leaders in Action programme to be launched in the Spring of 2023 in collaboration with British Council Cyprus. The programme provides access to small grants for intercommunal social impact projects.  
  • All participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Who are we looking for?

  • Youth aged 18-30 years old from all communities living in Cyprus. Based on availability and relevant experience, spots may be available to younger participants outside of this age category.
  • Strong interest in peacebuilding and women’s involvement in peace processes
  • Commitment to join all 5 workshops (certificates for participation will only be given to those who complete all workshops).
  • Interest in being part of the alumni community of the programme  
  • Fluency in English

How to apply?

Apply here by Monday, 9 January 2023. Selected Participants will be informed via email by Wednesday, 11 January 2023, on the decision of their application. Note that the spaces are limited and not all application will be selected.   

Τhe workshops are part of UNFICYP’s Peacebuilding in Divided Societies programme, which aims to strengthen women and young people’s input to discussions on peace and security, with a focus on peacebuilding, social action, leadership, negotiation, and mediation processes.
