Force Protection Unit awarded for their contribution for peace

Peacekeepers from UNFICYP’s Force Protection Unit were awarded for their service for peace in Cyprus at a medal presentation parade in UN Headquarters in Nicosia today.

Nineteen peacekeepers from the United Kingdom, Hungary, Slovakia and Argentina took part in the parade. The Force Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Major General Cheryl Pearce, awarded the peacekeepers with medals and thanked them for their valuable contributions for peace on the island.

Major Pearce highlighted the Unit has successfully been keeping up with their primary responsibilities to enforce the Head of Mission’s force protection measures, to provide investigative assistance to crime scenes within the buffer zone when there is UN personnel and property involved and supporting perimeter security of the UN Protected Area.

The Force Protection Unit’s principal tenet is to protect, through proactive policing and security measures, and preserve UNFICYP’s operational effectiveness and safeguard its personnel.
