Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and lies on one of the main bird migration routes across the area. In the United Nations buffer zone alone, there are around 200 bird species out of the over 400 known to exist on the island.

On 14 December 2021, despite the cold temperatures and the challenges posed by COVID-19, UNFICYP peacekeepers underwent the winter’s military skills competition.
