Security Council Press Elements following Briefing on Lebanon

UNHQ, New York

Wednesday, 02 September 2015

Today we heard a briefing of Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag and discussed the situation in that country.

Some media in Lebanon reported that this is an emergency meeting of the Security Council. It is not an emergency meeting of the Security Council. There was a request from Ms. Sigrid Kaag to share her perspective and concerns with members of the Security Council and we had a very effective discussion, which I think displayed considerable unity of views of members of the Security Council.

There are some press elements that I would like to share with you. It is not a press statement, it is press elements:

The members of the Security Council were briefed today by the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag on the situation in the country.

The members of the Security Council will continue to closely follow and monitor developments in support of the unity, sovereignty, stability and independence of Lebanon and its people.

The members of the Security Council expressed their support for the government of Lebanon and Prime Minister (Tamam) Salam. The members of the Security Council reiterated, on the basis of the Statement by the President of the Security Council on 19 March 2015, the need for the Parliament of Lebanon to meet and elect the President as soon as possible in order to put an end to the constitutional instability.

The members of the Security Council look forward to the high-level meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon that will take place during the upcoming session of UN General Assembly.
