UNITY - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has handed over a newly constructed police training facility to the South Sudan National Police Service in Unity state, reinforcing efforts to strengthen the rule of law, justice and civilian protection.
The UNMISS-funded project, implemented by Action for Conflict Resolution at a cost of approximately 50,000 US dollars, is expected to enhance the training and operational capacity of police officers in Bentiu and across the state.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Denis Fuh Chenwi, a representative from the UN peacekeeping mission, said the facility aligns with the Mission’s mandate to support national institutions and build the capacity of the police.
“This project supports the national police to better carry out their duties,” he said. “It will contribute to maintaining law and order while strengthening respect for human rights, gender considerations and the protection of civilians.”
Major General Gordon Machar, Acting Police Commissioner, Unity state, welcomed the initiative, noting that the facility will improve police professionalism and effectiveness.
“This training center will be used to build skills in investigative procedures, including election-related duties,” he said. “Such support from our international partners like UNMISS enables us to serve our communities more effectively.”
For her part, Mary Nyakun Diu, a women’s representative, highlighted the link between security and justice, and called for continued support to local police.
“Peace comes through the rule of law and justice,” she said. “We appeal for continued capacity-building for police officers so they can better protect civilians, especially in residential areas where crime remains a concern.”
Deputy Chief of Bentiu Town, Kuach-Eyom Tot, described the facility as a lasting investment in security.
“This building will serve our state for generations,” he said. “Strengthening the capacity of local police is essential to improving security and upholding the rule of law.”
The handover reflects UNMISS’ ongoing commitment to supporting national institutions to promote stability, justice and peace in South Sudan.
